Project Overview

The planned rest area facility is located on the west side of Highway 11 (southbound), 500 m north of an existing picnic area, on a site that had been previously developed. The planned rest area will include a 24/7 heated facility with washrooms, running water and indoor waiting area along with a parking and picnic area that will offer a welcoming and safe space for travelers on Highway 11.

The Study is following the approved environmental planning process for a Group ‘B’ project in accordance with the MTO Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities and Municipal Expressways, 2024 (Class EA).

Key Steps

  • Undertake environmental investigations at the site

  • Generate and evaluate alternative site layouts for the new Kahshe River rest area

  • Consult with review agencies and the public

  • Identify the preferred site layout for the new Kahshe River rest area

  • Confirm the potential environmental impacts of building the new Kahshe River rest area and develop mitigation measures, as required

  • Prepare a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) and make it available for a 30-day comment period
